ON HER AUDITION WITH ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER FOR THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA "He had the most magnificent apartment I had ever seen and I was floored by it. I went in and started vocalising with the accompanist and Andrew walked in as we were preparing. He didn't say hello, didn't introduce himself and just sat down in front of me and said, 'Shall we?' I thought to myself it was my one shot so I had better just stand up and do it, so I didn't introduce myself, I nodded to the accompanist and I did the two biggest numbers in the show. Then he stood up and said: 'That was great. I'm Andrew."
ABOUT A REFERANCE TO WHEN SHE WENT TO VISIT A PSYCHIC
"I'm a very rational person but I pray everyday."
ABOUT HER CHILDHOOD YEARS IN SCHOOL
"The truth is, I probably didn't want to be friends with some of those girls from prep school, because I found that a lot of their values were a little specious. Now, of course, all those girls are calling me and being like, 'We should have lunch!' And I'm like, 'Um...don't you remember how you didn't like me that much?"
ON HER APPROACH TO ACTING
"I'm heavy on preparation... some actors come to the set and don't know what scene they're playing, but that would make me crazy. It's not about control but perfectionism -- my biggest vice and one of my biggest assets."
ON WEARING CORSETS TO POTRAY CHRISTINE IN PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
"I'm convinced wearing those corsets for 14 hours at a time deformed me for life. I was 16 years old and still growing at the time of the shooting. I could barely breathe, and with Christine's intense emotions I hyperventilated and almost passed out. I think her name is Christine for a reason. She is Christ-like."
ABOUT SHOOTING A KISSING SCENE WITH PATRICK WILSON FOR THREE DAYS
"In this one scene, it took three days to shoot and it's the scene where my character passionately kisses her fiance for the first time. It was so complex with the snow coming down that it took three days to shoot. By the end of the three days I'd kissed him so much that my lips had swollen up - so much that I had to use an ice pack in between takes. Hardship, I know!"
ON HER THEORY ON ACTING
"I like Descartes's theory about a ball of wax. You can change its form from solid to liquid, but it's still the same ball of wax. With acting, you are the same person in a different form. You can only be what you know, and you only truly know yourself."
ON WHAT HER CAREER MEANS TO HER
"Sean Penn and Clint Eastwood have told me that I shouldn't feel that I need to be in the limelight or the spotlight all the time. A career is about longevity, as shown in their careers. So, I really want to only do the best things and work with the best people. That's what I strive to do."
ON WHICH ROLE SHE THINKS SHE DID BEST IN
"I think of all my roles, I was best in "Genius".
ON ONE OF THE SHOWS SHE WAS IN WHEN SHE PERFORMED FOR THE METROPOLITIAN OPERA
"I made $5 a night, and there were horses onstage, with me, that were getting $150... so it's the moment, I think, when you're valued less then livestock, that you really know you're there because you love it."
ON HOW MUCH SHE HATED CLOTHES WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER
"When I was young I hated clothing. I used to run around everywhere naked. I had a Beauty and the Beast themed birthday party when I was 4 years old, took off my Belle costume, ran around a bit, and then jumped in the pool - which I thought was appropriate. Now, I think it would cause too much of a scene"
ON HER DRESS SHE WORE TO THE NEW YORKER'S FOR CHILDREN EVENT (HELD ON APRIL 20, 2007)
"It's a modern take on a tutu, and it's pretty sheerlook, you can see my belly button!"
ON WORKING IN A SCENE WITH SEAN PEEN IN MYSTIC RIVER
"We were doing this scene in the morgue, and I'm lying on the table, my eyes closed, and the energy that was coming out of Sean was so powerful I started to cry. And Clint Eastwood says, 'Cut! Emmy, that was great, but you can't cry. You're dead."
ON PLAYING THE FEMALE LEAD IN THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
"My character is needy, sexy, and totally manipulated. And, oh! I get to kiss Gerry Butler and Patrick Wilson!"
ON WHAT SHE CAN'T TRAVEL WITHOUT WHEN SHE TRAVELS FOR WORK
"My silk eye mask, because when you travel you never know what time zone you're in, and as long as you have your mask, you can always sleep."
ON THE RELATINSHIP BETWEEN THE PHANTOM AND CHRISTINE IN THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
"She has this complex relationship with a guy who's been kind of a father figure to her, because they're both people who are alone and who've lost parents and they share this musical passion. They're kind of kindred spirits, and as she grows up, the relationship evolves, the boundaries begin to blur, and it becomes a bit more darkly sexual in nature, because he is that father figure to her."
ON HER MOST EMBARRASSING CHILDHOOD MEMORY
"When I was 13, at sleepaway camp, I swam really fast to impress a boy and my bikini top fell off."
ON BEAUTY & MAKEUP HINTS
Moisturize before you put your makeup on, always. Itll make you extra-glowy in the summertime.
ABOUT HER MOST GOOFIEST MOMENT ON SET
"I did a scene in Passionada where I walked into my house. We didn't rehearse it and on the first three takes I couldn't get the door open."
